Black skin care is unique, it presents its own issues, and its own good thing too! Black men for example suffer two of the most well known issues with black skin. I’m talking about “Razor bumps” and “Ingrown hair”, both of them related.

Pseudofolliculitis barbae, also called by its common name “razor bumps” present on faces who have coarse, wiry or curly hair, like… You guess black men! Did you know that around 85% of men have to deal with razor bumps everyday? Yes and this number increases everyday.

Razor bumps appear after shaving. The recent shaved hair curls back and burrows into the skin adjacent to the hair follicle. Right after shaving, the hair ends are very sharp and this facilitates the appearing of the bumps, and penetration of the skin. Then comes the nasty part: the razor bumps start itching, burning, possibly causing scarring and making shaving a next-to-impossible task. To end razor bumps many men shave tried depilatory creams, but these creams will often leave the skin with lots of irritation. Some “razor bumps cream” seem to help but on the long term the side effects catch up.

How Ingrown hairs begin

Although it is true that both men and women suffer from ingrown hairs, men tend to have it more acute because of their facial hair follicle’s coarseness and thickness
Ingrown hairs build after the hair has been recently cut. As your hair grows, it curls over inside the follicle and doesn’t make it to the surface. The result is an unsightly, “bump” on the black skin. A few razor bumps moreover form when a growing hair exits the follicle and bends back towards the skin surface. When these sharp, shaved edges of coarse hair reach the skin surface, they grow back into the skin, producing these bumpy spots.

The Way to Solve Ingrown Hair on Black Skin

The best solution for most men is the simplest one: the use of tweezers. However it is good notice that nowadays there are good products out there destined to prevent ingrown hair and thus razor bumps.

A proper shaving technique is also needed to prevent ingrown hairs and razor bumps. Here we leave you with 5 tips to star today with your black skin care for men.

1. Be sure to use a clean blade at all times. If you have a bad case of razor bumps we recommend that you use a new blade every week. Be sure to throw away safely the used ones. If you use an electric shaver, replace the rotary blades accordingly.

2. Shave following the direction the hair grows. This is very important around the neck areas since shaving against the grain is one of the main causes of pointy, sharp hairs that can grow back into the skin.

3. Avoid stretching your skin to “shave better”. This may cause darkness and discoloration of underlying skin.

4. Avoid skin irritation by eating well. Foods that contain lots of fat, oil, cholesterol or sodium make your skin prone to damage.

5. Depilatories work fast, but can produce even more irritation and redness. Remember to use an alcohol based cream to put on your face after you depilate.

Many men make the mistake of thinking that they do not have to look after their skin. It is thought of as feminine and no man wants to be seen looking the slightest bit feminine by taking an interest in their skin! However, there are types of men who love to groom themselves. They take great pride in the way that they look and women are drawn to these men as they tend to look healthier.

There are a number of things that you can do if you really want to improve your skin. The most common and easiest ways to do it include what follows.

Good skin makes a good first impression, so if you want to improve your skin, what can you do?

1. Keeping Your Face Clean – this is an obvious skin care tip, yet it is one that many men forget about. Clean skin looks healthy and it provides a good base for skin care. Little things, such as washing morning and night with a good product designed especially for your skin should help to clear things up. Keeping the skin clean at all times will stop any blemishes from occurring.

2. Knowing Your Skin Type – in order to look after your skin, you first need to know what skin type you actually are. There are generally four main types of skin. There is dry skin, oily skin, normal skin and combination skin. Generally, combination skin is the hardest to treat as the other three types have many products especially designed with them in mind. It is a lot harder to find combination skin products, so you may have to do a little research if you have that type of skin. Using the wrong products can make the condition of your skin a lot worse, so it is vital to know what skin type you are.

3. Be Careful When Shaving – often, it is easy to slip up when shaving, especially if you are in a hurry. However, cuts and rashes do not look good, so always use the right products to help to give you a smooth, hassle free shave. Using decent shaving foam that is designed to give a smooth shave and by using an aftershave balm afterwards, it should help to keep your skin smooth and rash free.

4. Tone Your Skin – as well as cleansing your face and keeping it clean, a good toner will help to keep your skin firm and healthy looking. Another advantage of using a toner is the fact that it can help to reduce pore size and it can also help with ingrown hairs. So, toning should definitely be a part of every mans skincare routine.

5. Moisturize – finally, the last step in taking care of your skin and perhaps the most important is to moisturize. Moisturizing the skin keeps it soft, looking healthy and it really can boost your confidence. If you only do one thing in your skincare routine, make sure that it is moisturizing!

There are plenty of things that you can do if you want to look after your manly skin. With so many mens products available out on the market these days, there really is no excuse not to look after yourself. So, the next time you are out shopping, pick up a few products and make your skin look and feel amazing.

There are tons of resources for men skin care available, along with products made for men. Skin care has been part of many men’s daily regimen thanks to the benefits of great, fresh and young looking skin.

But what about men of color? Black men or Hispanic men? The truth is there is only a limited amount of resources that focus on skin care for Black men, which makes us wonder: does darker skin need different care?

The answer is yes. In African-American men skin there tends to be more razor bumps and burn and ingrown hairs. This is due to the different type of facial hair.

Also men of color can suffer from dark spots and hyper pigmentation which causes the skin to have an uneven tone.

So in order to address these issues a couple of companies and sites have created a special section for Black men skin care which is much needed. I’ve also seen a couple of skin care products for Black men available that work wonders.

Products such as Barc and African Male by men essentials are great examples of products made for Black men.

But of course proper skin care is the same for all men. No matter what your skin color or age, men should always follow a skin care regimen to help maintain a young and healthy looking skin.

Especially in for men with darker skin color, using a facial scrub/exfoliate and skin toner is essential to eliminating or keeping away from dark spots and hyper pigmentation.

Using the right shaving cream and after shave will also help reduce and alleviate razor burn and stop razor bumps.

Use the right skin care products for men and you will definitely keep your skin looking healthy, toned, young and overall attractive.

By: Victor Anicama

The skin product industry is a tremendous multi-billion dollar business, yet the majority of resources are utilized to gear products toward women. Skin care for men is just as essential, and men want to look and feel younger just as much as their female counterparts.

A recent study conducted by a well published men’s magazine revealed that 27% of men considered the skin on their face to be the most important feature that people notice first. That statistic tells us that for many men skin care is a priority. This article is written for men to understand what ingredients are important in a quality product, and which will help you look and feel younger.

What to look for

One of the most important components of human skin is keratin. It lends structure to the skin, and helps to give it a taut youthful appearance. Naturally, as we age the keratin in our skin breaks down. If it is not replaced and restored, we get wrinkles and our skin ages.

Any skin care for men should include a functional form of keratin that the skin can absorb and use readily. Many companies claim to include keratin in their products, but it is actually just synthetic filler made from animal by-products.

A primary reason for aging in the skin is the presence of free radicals. These are damaging compounds found in all of our cells. They can be neutralized by antioxidants, and effective men skin care products should include a potent antioxidant. One of the strongest antioxidants is Coenzyme Q10, which is very powerful at destroying these free radicals. The end result is a halting of the aging process, and healthier, younger looking skin.

Many people think that skin care for men does not need the same concentration of vitamins and minerals as women’s products. Not true! In fact, researchers have found that many times men’s skin needs a higher quantity of these nutrients to penetrate areas of skin with hair growth, such as the beard or mustache area.

One compound that delivers such vitamins and minerals with great efficacy is Wakame, which is derived from Japanese sea algae. It is used as an oral dietary supplement, and is now being included in products used to nourish the skin. As an added benefit, Wakame is also a powerful antioxidant.

What should you avoid?

Some additives to avoid include parabens and fragrances. Parabens are universally used in many commercial skin products as a preservative to increase shelf life. Their safety is questionable as they have been suspected of causing various types of cancers.

You may think that men skin care products would not include fragrance but many do. These fragrances can dry out your skin and cause harmful allergic reactions, so are best avoided when choosing a product.

The bottom line is that skin care for men is a growing area of research and technology, and it is important to know what makes a product effective and what makes a product useless. The best consumer is a well informed one. Good Luck!

By: Rachel Matthews
